In April 2019, Holly Joseph Peters created a WhatsApp chat, reconnecting Antigua Girls’ High School (AGHS) alumnae from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s across the globe. Women from Antigua, Barbados, the USA, Canada, England, and Zimbabwe joined in, reminiscing about their school days and rekindling old friendships.
As conversations unfolded, they recognized a larger purpose-to create a lasting legacy for their alma mater. By June 2020, a dedicated committee was formed, led by Innes Howe (Project Lead & Chair), Carmen Carr Downes (Recording Secretary), and Ermina Davis Osoba. Their vision attracted more collaborators, including Rita Allen Voeth, the late Sheila Piggot, Nellimay Daniel Tunteng, Erene Anthony, Evie Davis Sheppard, and Pat Sheppard Brewster.
Contributions poured in from alumnae worldwide, featuring stories, poetry, and spiritual reflections, complemented by historic images from individuals and The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. Through Zoom meetings the team meticulously edited and designed the project ensuring it reflected the spirit of AGHS. In addition, with support from Lorrie Davis Arrindell and Connie Gore Creque, they funded the full cost as a donation.
On November 30, 2024, their vision became a reality-Memories of Antigua Girls’ High School 50s, 60s & 70s was published by Tellwell Publishing. More than just a book, it’s a tribute to the resilience, sisterhood, and legacy of AGHS alumnae, with net proceeds supporting the next generation of students and the stories they’ll one day share.
